Deep Creek's Michelle Boyd made two members of the Sweat family very happy when she signed to play basketball at Norfolk State recently.
Boyd, a 5-foot-10 forward, signed to play basketball for NSU coach James Sweat. But she may also compete for Sweat's wife, LaVerne, who coaches track.
``I'm going to try to do both, if it doesn't hurt my grades,'' Boyd said Tuesday night. ``They both came to see me when he (James Sweat) was recruiting me.''
Boyd averaged 8.9 points for the Hornets last year and was a second-team all-Southeastern District pick. She was also third in the discus and sixth in the shot put at the Group AAA track meet.
``I chose Norfolk State because I really wanted to go to college to play basketball and nobody was really interested but Coach Sweat,'' she said. ``Basketball is my love.''
Sweat said Boyd could ``contribute immediately. Keita is the total package. She is versatile enough to play any position on the floor.''
Sweat also announced the signing of two other players, Keita Davis, a 6-1 guard-forward from Plymouth, N.C.; and Tarsha Bowers, a 5-8 guard-forward from Goldsboro, N.C.
The signings bring Norfolk State's total to four. Churchland guard Kizzy Butler signed Nov. 16. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
