JOHN D. POFFENBARGER SR.

John Durr Poffenbarger Sr., 88, of the 200 block of Kevill Road, founder of Poffenbargers Bakery, died Dec. 1, 1994, in a Portsmouth hospital.

He was a native of Hagerstown, Md., a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, Tidal Masonic Lodge (NU)273, Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter (NU)36, Portsmouth Commandery (NU)5, Knights Templar, Khedive Temple and Tidal Wave Chapter (NU)9 Order of the Eastern Star, charter member of America-Fellowship Masonic Lodge (NU)148 and Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, life member of the United Methodist Men and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vera Kee Poffenbarger; two sons, Jack D. Poffenbarger of Portsmouth and W. Michael Poffenbarger of Citronelle, Ala.; a sister, Louise Harman of Parsons, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-granddaughter.

A funeral with masonic rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, by the Rev. Kathryn Pigg. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. today.
