SANDBAG COMMENTS EXTENDED

The state Division of Coastal Management has extended the public comment period for proposed changes to state rules governing oceanfront sandbag use and erosion response.

Written comments on the proposed changes will be accepted through Jan. 6, and must be postmarked by that date.

The proposed changes to the Coastal Resources Commission's sandbag rules would allow the use of sandbags to protect buildings and septic systems threatened by the surf. The proposed rules also would allow a sandbag permit only one time per property, even if that property changes ownership.

Proposed changes to the commission's rules governing erosion response would clarify that beach nourishment, when feasible, is an acceptable response to erosion. The changes would continue the state's ban on hard erosion control devices, such as seawalls - except when the commission determines there is an overriding public need for the project.

Copies of the proposed rules are available in the Nov. 1 issue of the North Carolina Register or from the Division of Coastal Management at (919) 733-2293. by CNB
