The final showing of ``Titanica,'' which takes audiences on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure of discovery to the site of the world's most famous shipwreck, will be this holiday season.
The film is playing at the Virginia Air and Space Center now through Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Titanic, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner ever built, was described as unsinkable.
On April 10, 1912, the Titanic left England and traveled to France to pick up passengers. On April 11, 1912, she set sail for the Atlantic Ocean. Just four days into its maiden voyage, it collided with an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912; 1,502 people died.
Nearly 80 years later, in the summer of 1991, a Canadian-American-Russian expedition set out to explore the shipwreck and to conduct scientific research.
Award-winning filmmaker Stephen Low weaves a story of the expedition and the legendary Titanic. According to Low, ``Titanica'' is unique because it is ``the first well-lit, deep-ocean film.''
Eerie images of the Titanic as it now lies on the ocean floor are contrasted with photographs of the ship in all its splendor, taken in 1912. The film also highlights the touching and eloquent comments of Eva Hart, who, as a 7-year-old, survived the tragic night, but lost her father.
``Titanica'' is showing in the IMAX Theater at the Virginia Air and Space Center. IMAX puts the audience in the picture with a screen that is five stories high and seven stories wide, and features a powerful sound system.
Tickets are available at all TicketMaster locations or by calling 671-8100 on the Southside and 872-8100 on the Peninsula. Tickets also are available at the Virginia Air and Space Center.
