Colonel Henry Hall Hardenbergh Jr., 76, a resident of Spring Grove in Surry County, died on Sunday, Dec. 4, 1994, in his home.
Col. Hardenbergh was born at Frederick's Hall in Louisa County and was the son of the late Henry Hall and Marion Brand Hardenbergh. He graduated from Mineral High School in Louisa County and attended V.P.I. in the class of 1938. He entered the Army in 1941 as a 2nd lieutenant, Infantry. During World War II, he was a Battalion Commander, 2nd Battalion 310th Infantry, 78th Division, Europe. During the Korean Conflict he was Battalion Commander, 3rd Battalion, 35th Infantry, 25th Division. In Vietnam he was Chief of Operations, MACV Headquarters in Saigon for over a year. He graduated from the Army War College, Command and General Staff College, the Infantry School, the Army Language School and the Army Management School. He received the following decorations, Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge with Star. He retired as a colonel in 1971.
After his retirement he owned Charles G. Rowell Insurance Agency in Surry. In 1985 he founded the Spring Grove Company to bottle water from a spring on his property. He later sold this business and founded and served as president of Spring Grove Transport, Inc. in Hopewell.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Surry. His many memberships included the Richmond Blues, Tar Bay Gun Club, the Waverly Ruritan Club, Ducks Unlimited, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the National Rifle Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine H. Bishop.
He is survived by his wife, Cornelia Land Hardenbergh; two sons, Henry Hall Hardenbergh III of Disputanta, Carter Land Hardenbergh of Prince George; a brother, Brand Hardenbergh of Colonial Beach; a granddaughter, Michelle Lynn Hardenbergh of Prince George; two grandsons, Charles Van Evera Hardenbergh of Disputanta and Derek Alan Hardenbergh of Richmond.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Surry on Thursday, Dec. 8, 1994, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Merrill O. Young. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
