A James River Correctional Center inmate escaped from work detail Monday in a state dairy truck, the Corrections Department said.
Michael D. Hall, 31, was last seen driving the farm vehicle toward a barn on the prison's adjacent dairy farm between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., but he never arrived, said corrections spokesman Jim Jones.
The medium-security prison is east of Goochland. Hall, a minimum custody inmate, was authorized to drive the truck, Jones said.
Jones described Hall as a 5-foot-9 white man with brown eyes and brown hair; he is balding and has a tattoo on his upper right arm.
The 2-ton farm truck is green, with the license plate tags 34-947S.
A 20-person team was searching for Hall, Jones said. Jones said there is speculation that Hall was headed for Lexington, his last known address, but there were no firm leads Monday afternoon.
Hall was serving a 25-year sentence for breaking and entering, larceny and burglary in Rockbridge County. Jones said Hall had worked on the 4,000-acre farm since May.
The farm provides milk to the state's prison system.
