A Newport News woman was killed and her husband was injured when a truck slammed into their car Monday on Virginia Route 10 west of Smithfield, state police said.
Police said the accident occurred about 10:45 a.m. when the westbound truck driven by Barry E. Sprouse of Virginia Beach slid into the eastbound lane.
Food products spilled out of the truck, closing the highway for several hours.
The road was reopened about 2 p.m.
The name of the woman was withheld until relatives could be contacted.
Her husband was taken by Nightingale air ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Sprouse was charged with reckless driving.
