The submarine Cincinnati, which once traveled 60,000 miles under
water during an around-the-world cruise, was deactivated Thursday
after a 16-year Navy career. The Los Angeles-class submarine and
its crew of 140 men were honored at a ceremony at the Norfolk Naval
Base that featured the boat's first skipper, retired Capt. G.V.
Wilkes III, left, as the principal speaker. Crew members of the
Cincinnati, below, ``secure the watch'' as they go ashore from the
submarine for the last time. The nuclear-powered Cincinnati was
commissioned in June 1978, named for several predecessor vessels.
The first Cincinnati was a gunboat that fought on the Mississippi
River during the Civil War. The second saw service in the
Spanish-American War, and the third served in the Atlantic Ocean
during World War II.
