FIREFIGHTERS STOP BLAZE NEAR APPALACHIAN TRAIL

A fire that consumed 110 acres next to the Appalachian Trail in the George Washington National Forest was contained at dusk Friday.

The fire was discovered late Thursday afternoon on mid-slope at Saddle Gap in Amherst County, which is near the site of a fire that consumed 225 acres in August 1993. A hunter's fire that was not extinguished properly is the suspected cause, Forest Service spokesman W. Terry Smith said.

A crew of Virginia Military Institute cadets worked through the night Thursday to stop the fire's progress, and three 20-person crews were sent to the site Friday.

By 4:30 p.m., firefighters had contained the fire and established a line around the burning acres, Smith said.

The fire is in hardwood trees and mountain laurel shrubbery. No structures are in danger.

This is the 30th fire in the George Washington National Forest this year, but most of the previous blazes consumed 1 to 5 acres.
