RUSSIA'S NEMIROVSKY RELEASED BY ADMIRALS

The Hampton Roads Admirals released forward Mike Nemirovsky Friday and activivated Tony MacAulay, a defenseman who had been on the 14-day injured reserve list.

Nemirovsky did not score and had two penalty minutes in four outings with Hampton Roads, though he came close to getting a key goal in his last skate down the ice for the Admirals.

Nemirovsky was the last of nine Admirals to shoot during a shootout with South Carolina last Wednesday, won by the Stingrays, 4-3.

His shot clanked off the goalpost.

Nemirovsky is a native of Moscow, Russia, who moved to Toronto when he was 3. He moved back to Russia when he was 18 and played two seasons of pro hockey in Moscow before moving this season to Tallahassee, where he was released last month.

Brophy says he hopes Nemirovsky will be picked up by another ECHL team or perhaps a team in the Colonial Hockey League.

Ironically, Nemirovsky will miss playing against Torpedo Yarolslalv, a Moscow team that will meet the Admirals at Scope on Jan. 4. Nemirovsky played the last two seasons for Spartak, which is in the same league with Torpedo Yaroslalv.

FORMER REDSKIN: Jeff Bostic, who played on three Super Bowl champions and was one of the original ``Hogs'' for the Washington Redskins, made a brief speech between periods to promote safe driving.

``It's great to be in the Hampton Roads-Norfolk-Virginia Beach area and it's especially great to be watching hockey,'' he said. ``We're not watching much hockey up in Washington.

``As a matter of fact, we don't even see much professional football in Washington these days.''

Bostic then implored the near sellout crowd at Scope not to drink and drive. Noting several automobile accidents involving NFL players in recent months, he said:

``I'm not telling you not to go out and have a drink. But if you do, have someone drive you home.

``Everyone wants their name in the newspaper, but please don't get your name in the paper as a statistic.''

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: John Porco, who leads the Admirals in scoring, was named Admirals Player of the Month for November. Can a callup by the Portland Pirates be far behind?

Matt Mallgrave was named Player of the Month in October and was called up shortly thereafter by Portland, the Admirals' AHL affiliate.

COATS FOR TICKETS: If you're going to the Admirals-Renegades contest Sunday in Richmond and have an old coat you don't want, you can save a few bucks by taking it with you.

The Salvation Army is collecting used coats at the Seventh Street entrance of the Richmond Coliseum. Fans will receive a certificate good for a free upper-level ticket with the purchase of another (for $6.25).
