Bowler of the Week honors are shared by three bowlers, including a youth leaguer, who joined the 300 Club.
Dean Stephens fired his 300 in the Military Doubles Tenpin League, going on to a 699 series, at Pinboy's of Military. It came behind games of 224 and 175.
John Mathias notched his 12-striker en route to a 746 series in the Monday Scratch Doubles Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake.
Youth leaguer Harold Credle Jr. blasted a 300 in his 648 series in the Tuesday Youth Scratch Doubles Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake.
Tenpin topics: Sam Zurich of Melbourne, Fla., won the Norfolk Southern Region Open PBA tour at the Naval Base Lanes, defeating Ken McNeely of Morganton, N.C., in the final, 237-226. Zurich won $3,000 and McNeely pocketed $1,500. Other step-ladder finalists were No. 3 finisher Mike Whittington, No. 4 John Delp and No. 5 Tim Criss. Several local bowlers cashed. Mike Terrell was 16th and won $500. Bobby Thompson placed 19th and won $320. Jon Stites was 20th and earned $200. Also cashing in were Bill Anthony (24th for $175), Brent Whitehead (28th for $165), Tommy Holmes (30th for $160) and Ken Dich (tied for 33rd for $157). Zurich also was high qualifier in the eight-game preliminary with 1,829. . . . Bill Bjorgaard rolled a 279 game on his way to 742 in the Tuesday Rejects League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. In the same league, Carrie Paisley tossed a 255 game. . . . Collie Lowe gained 700 Club membership with games of 211, 286 and 204 in the Military Doubles League at Fair Lanes of Military. The 286 game was 101 pins over average for Lowe. . . . Robyn Brinkley joined the Century Club with a 261 game in the Strikers League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. She averaged 144 before her 569 series. . . . In the Saturday Classic Mixed-League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake, Bev Whitley had the thrill of hitting a 200 game. Bev averages 139. . . . Other gems of the week: Lee Robey's 279 in the Charles Peete loop, Eddie Brothers' 279 in the Tuesday Men's Commercial League, Louvenia Smith's 270 in the Charles Peete and Ross Wheatley's 268 in the Tuesday Men's Commercial. . . . Jim Kunkle registered a nifty 212 triplicate in the Masters League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. At the same center in the Early Birds League, Sherry Spence had three 129 games. . . back-to-back 300 games. She followed with a 238, chalking up 29 consecutive strikes at the outset of action. A 202-average bowler, Kelle said her goal always had been to roll a 700 series. The righthander finished with 838, 13 pins over the national YABA record. . . . Tommy Tuttle of King, N.C., who has bowled locally several times in PBA tournaments, has achieved the pinnacle in the game by election to the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. He won a PBA tournament in Portsmouth in 1969. Now a bowling proprietor, Tuttle will be inducted on March 16. . . . The National Bowling Stadium in Reno has opened. It hosts the ABC Tournament beginning in February. Remember, the deadline for entering the ABC meet is January 5.
Duckpin data: Tiger Baker is on a roll in the Tuesday Major Trio League at Bowlarama, backing up sets of 438 and 449. . . . Dot Crossley was a pin shy of going 50 over average with her 129 game. She averages 80 in the Monday Morning Mixed League at Victory Lanes. . . . Alice Durham sports the best record in the Mary Crabtree Memorial Singles League, pacing the National Division with a 9-2 mark. The American Division leader at 8-3 is Denny Jackson. . . . Ronnie Ketchum slammed a nine-mark 192 game in his 458 set in the Industrial League. In the same league, Walt Laughon pitched a 182 game, finishing at 445. . . . Berlene Byrum racked up games of 118, 136 and 147 for her 401 set in the Monday Nite Ladies League at Victory Lanes. Sister Mary Underwood was just three pins back with 398, tossing a 145 single. . . . Terry Deats flipped a 445 in the Stormy Weather League. . . . Virginia Driskell's 362 in the Tuesday Major Trio League included a 154 game. . . . April Simpson chalked up a 163 game in the Victory Youth League. She's 13 years old.
