The City Council took the following actions at its meeting Wednesday:
An ordinance accepting and appropriating a grant of $4,514 from the Virginia Department of Waste Management for fiscal year 1994-95. The money will be used to fund a work program during the school year, provide support for the Beautification and Litter Control Commission and coordinate the city's recycling effort. The city will not be required to provide matching funds. Approved 7-0
An ordinance accepting and appropriating a grant of $90,000 from the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of Economic Adjustment, and appropriating $12,000 in matching city funds for preparation of a community reuse plan for the former Driver Naval Radio Transmitting Facility. The Driver facility was recommended for closure in 1993. The money will be used to hire a consultant to prepare a reuse plan for the facility. (first reading)
A resolution supporting state funding for the Virginia Cooperative Extension. The extension is a joint educational program among Virginia Tech, Virginia State University and local government. The resolution asks the General Assembly to restore funding for the agency amounting to $2.89 million. Approved 7-0
A resolution providing a 3 percent increase for current and future retirees. Councilman Curtis R. Milteer moved to delay voting until Dec. 21. Motion passed 7-0
A resolution endorsing Suffolk's legislative program to be presented to Suffolk's delegation at the General Assembly. Approved 7-0
A motion to establish a City Council work session for Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 5:30 p.m. unless canceled. Approved 7-0
