CHARLIE B. GASKINS

Charlie Baynard Gaskins, 84, of 1223 Bart James Road died Saturday in Sentara Bayside Hospital in Virginia Beach. He was a native of Pasquotank County where he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eureka Masonic Lodge (NU)317 AF & AM, York Rite Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple since May 1947 and past president of the Elizabeth City Shrine Club.

As a young man he sailed with his father, Captain Zora B. Gaskins, on the schooner Harriett C. Whitehead (a working vessel) and later took over as captain until the start of World War II. He then worked as a recruiter for the Norfolk Navy Yard. In the late 1940's he went to work with R.S. Jordan Company until 1991 when ill health forced him to retire.

Mr. Gaskins was son of the late Capt. Zora B. and Mrs. Nola Gaskins and the husband of Sarah Elizabeth James Gaskins.

Besides his wife he is survived by one step-daughter, Margaret Berry Barham of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Marie Gaskins Sanders of Elizabeth City, N.C.; four grandsons, Robert B. Barham of San Diego, Ca.; David C. Barham of Knotts Island, N.C.; Frederick L. Barham and James P. Barham both of Virginia Beach, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Nicole and Scott Barham of Knotts Island, several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic Rites. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital. The family will be at the residence 1223 Bart James Road. Twiford's Memorial Chapel Church St. Elizabeth City has charge of arrangements.
