MAYHEW B. SAWYER

Mayhew B. Sawyer died Nov. 23, in Virginia Beach.

Born in North Carolina in 1914, he spent most of his adult life in Virginia Beach. After earning a degree from East Carolina Teachers College he taught and eventually became a merchant, owning Virginia Beach Grocery for 30 years. He was a member of First Colonial Baptist Church, active in club activities and political issues. After retiring, he enjoyed investing in stocks and being active at the retirement home where he lived.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Gardiner of Warrenton, Va., Barbara Sawyer of Raytown, Missouri; a son, Hugh Sawyer of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Eoline Langley and two grandchildren, Dana and Scott Gardiner.

Memorial services were held on Sunday Nov. 27.
