Hilda Ballance Brown, 87, of Hatteras, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 1994, in a Norfolk hospital. Mrs. Brown was a native of Hatteras and a retired elementary school teacher, having taught in Dare and Carteret County School Systems. She was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, Beaufort Chapter of Eastern Star, Chapter 128, past matron of Order of the Amaranth, Coastal Court 12 and a member of the Retired Teacher's Association of Dare County. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Charlie Hand Ballance Sr. and Mrs. Lina Styron Ballance and the widow of Roy Brown.
Mrs. Brown is survived by a son, Charles Brown of Hatteras; a sister, Maxine B. Basnight of Manteo; two grandchildren, Heath Brown and Annie Laura Brown, both of Hatteras.
A church service will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1994 at 2 p.m. in the Hatteras United Methodist Church by the Revs. Dwight Burrus and Jim Huskins. Burial will follow in the Ballance Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras, on Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Twiford's Funeral Home, Hatteras, is in charge of arrangements.
