U.VA. STUDENT CHOSEN FOR RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Zayde G. Antrim, a history major at the University of Virginia, was named a Rhodes scholar on Sunday.

Antrim, 22, of Richmond, was one of four students at Southern universities chosen after interviews Saturday for the prestigious scholarships to attend Oxford University. Thirty-two students were chosen overall.

``I've dreamed of being a Rhodes scholar for a long time,'' Antrim said. ``I've always been academically inclined, and I always set high goals for myself, and the Rhodes scholarship is a pretty high goal.

``Oxford is a wonderful place for African studies, Middle Eastern students and Islamic studies, and that's what I'm interested in.'' She said she would like to earn a master's degree in Oriental studies at Oxford.

The regional scholarship committee told the students the results about 4 p.m. Saturday.

``I was pretty shocked. I was pretty happy,'' Antrim said. ``I had a plane to catch, so I called my parents from the airport.''

Antrim studies African history at the University of Virginia, and speaks French and Arabic. She is writing an undergraduate thesis on 19th century West African history and British abolitionism in Africa based on the writings of a British woman who visited Africa.

University of Virginia spokeswoman Louise Dudley said Antrim is the school's 41st Rhodes scholar, the largest number from a public university.

Like many of the students named Rhodes scholars, Antrim participates in community service. She is a volunteer with the Sexual Assault Resource Agency in Charlottesville, and just finished a term as president of the campus group Sexual Assault Facts and Education.

Antrim is also a certified aerobics instructor.

Last week, she learned she had won another prestigious scholarship to study abroad: a Marshall scholarship. But she said she told Rhodes officials she would accept their scholarship if it were offered to her.

Antrim was raised in Richmond, and graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. MEMO: THIS YEAR'S WINNERS
