MARGARET S. BUTLER

Margaret Shotton Butler, 82, of Carrsville, died Sunday in a nursing home.

She was the widow of Alfred Rawls Butler. Mrs. Butler was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was the youngest daughter of Margaret Anne Lewis Shotton and Thomas E. Shotton. Mrs. Butler was a music teacher and musician. She taught music in Suffolk, Isle of Wight and Franklin Public Schools. She served as organist for Beaver Dam Baptist Church and High Street Methodist Church. She was a member of the Franklin Women's Club, Franklin Music Study Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an alumnus of Mary Washington College and a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her daughter, Margaret Carolyn Witschard of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a son, Alfred R. Butler IV of Carrsville; three brothers, Howard John Shotton and Thomas E. Shotton Jr., both of Suffolk, and Dr. Donald Lewis Shotton of Lynchburg. Mrs. Butler has four grandsons, Walter A. Witschard Jr. of Bern, Switzerland, Kevin Rawls Witschard of Portland Ore., A. Rawls Butler V of New York City and C. Adam Butler of Charlottesville, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Beaver Dam Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Peerey. Burial will be in the church cemetery with R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will be at the home of Alfred Butler, 30375 Colosse Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the memorial fund of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 3593 Carrsville Highway, Franklin, Va. 23851.
