MAN STRUCK BY CAR

A 19-year-old Navy man was critically injured Monday on Interstate 64 when he was struck by a car after he emerged from the wreckage of a car that had hit a guard rail and overturned, state police said.

The accident occurred at 4:28 a.m. near the 15th View exit on eastbound I-64, closing the lanes for more than an hour. The 19-year-old was a passenger in a 1990 Volkswagen driven by an 18-year-old Navy man.

The driver told police he lost control of his car when another driver cut him off and the Volkswagen left the road and ran into a guard rail, causing it to flip over.

As the passenger got out of the overturned car, he was struck by a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Irene Jones, 28, of Hampton.

The two men in the Volkswagen are stationed aboard the guided-missile destroyer Arleigh Burke. Their names and the extent of injuries were withheld until relatives could be contacted.

State police said alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. In the only charges filed, the 18-year-old was cited for reckless driving. An investigation is continuing.
