The N.C. Board of Transportation has awarded a $848,493 contract to a Williamston firm to build a rest area and visitor information center on U.S. 64 on the east side of the Scuppernong River in Columbia.
The contract was awarded to A.R. Chesson Construction Co.
The contract calls for building a parking area and restrooms and a visitor information building connected by a wooden deck.
Several picnic areas will be located on the banks on the Scuppernong River.
Work is expected to begin Jan. 2, with completion in September. by CNB
