GRACE M. SMITH

Grace Maynard Smith, 92, Professor Emeritus of the College of William and Mary, died Dec. 12, 1994.

Miss Smith, a native of Norfolk County, had formerly lived in Portsmouth, Richmond and Williamsburg. She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, where she had taught Bible Study and two Adult Sunday School classes for many years. She was listed in the 1989 edition of ``Who's Who in American Christian Leadership.'' She was a past matron of Victory Chapter 16, Order of the Eastern Star.

Miss Smith was a graduate of the University of Virginia and Virginia Intermont College, and had pursued postgraduate courses at Syracuse University and Richmond Professional Institute. She had served in the following educational positions: teacher of high school English and History, Hickory High School; visiting teacher, Director of Adjustive Services and School Psychologist for Norfolk County Schools.

She had served as assistant supervisor of Special Education, State Department of Education of Virginia. She headed the Governor's Commission for a state-wide study of needs and planning for the education of the mentally retarded in Virginia. She represented the State of Virginia for a year's study throughout the United States of the programs for Gifted Children, a project sponsored by the Southern Regional Education Board and the Carnegie Foundation. She was Professor Emeritus of the College of William and Mary, where she instituted the program for Special Education and taught graduate classes in several areas of this field. She was a member of Kappa Delta Phi and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Survivors include a sister, Lucille S. Peele of Chesapeake; a brother, Philip T. Smith of Norfolk; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Monumental United Methodist Church by the Rev. Raymond H. Edmonds. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with Foster Funeral Home handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Monumental United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 450 Dinwiddie St., Portsmouth, Va. 23704.
