Curtis Brandon, a 17-year-old whom a prosecutor once dubbed ``not fit to live in human society,'' was convicted Tuesday of robbing a pizza delivery driver and, because this is his third similar conviction, will spend most of his adult life in prison.
Because of his two earlier robbery convictions, Brandon won't be eligible for parole while serving the 40-year sentence for robbing a Domino's Pizza delivery driver Nov. 3, according to Detective Pat Lewis.
Brandon was also sentenced Tuesday to 10 years for stealing a handgun a few days before the Nov. 3 robbery, and five years for using a gun during the robbery of the Domino's driver.
Brandon's sentences total more than 140 years, Lewis said.
The Nov. 3 robbery of the Domino's driver happened just four days after Brandon robbed another pizza delivery driver, James Murray, and shot him through the heart. Previous court testimony showed Brandon ate the stolen pizza and watched from an apartment window while rescue crews frantically tried to save Murray's life. Murray later recovered.
Police have said only the skill of rescue workers and trauma teams at Virginia Beach General Hospital saved Brandon from a capital murder charge in the shooting of Murray.
