A 23-year-old man who had been living in Norfolk was killed early Wednesday after he and a companion were abducted while walking along a street in Newport News, police said.
Police said both men were robbed during the abduction but one was able to escape after jumping from a moving car. That's apparently when the other man was shot and killed.
A 19-year-old Newport News man was arrested later Wednesday and charged. A second suspect is being sought.
Police said the victim of the shooting was Milton Lashawn Joseph. He is a native of the Virgin Islands but has been living in Norfolk. His exact address was uncertain. The other man was unhurt. Police are not releasing his name.
The suspect was identified as Jermaine A. Williams of the 600 block of Hampton Ave. He is charged with murder, two counts of abduction, two counts of robbery and two counts of using a firearm while committing a felony.
Police said the men were walking in the 800 block of 36th St. shortly after midnight when they were confronted by the two abductors, at least one of them armed.
The pedestrians were forced at gunpoint into a car owned by one of the victims. As they drove along the 1200 block of 29th St., the unidentified victim jumped out and fled.
