Donald ``Dre'' Bly, who was chosen as the top offensive football player in the Southeastern District this year by the coaches of the eight teams, was honored as the fall athlete of the year by the Portsmouth Sports Club.
Bly, a two-way performer who excelled as a wingback (receptions totaling 493 yards) and in the secondary (four interceptions), has narrowed his college choice to the five universities he will visit - Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Syracuse and Clemson.
He already has visited Virginia and Virginia Tech and goes to North Carolina this weekend.
Old Dominion Univerity women's basketball coach Wendy Larry headlined the December meeting of the Sports Club.
``Our team this year,'' said Larry, `` has the most talent I have ever had the opportunity to coach.''
Larry had glowing words for guard Ticha Penicheiro. ``She has court vision like no other player I have ever coached - and that includes (All-American) Nancy Lieberman,'' said Larry.
Larry also pointed out that the Lady Monarchs also are excelling in the classroom.
``For the past three years our players have had an overall grade point average over 3.0. So don't believe you can't win in the classroom as well as on the court.''
Wilson athletic director Dave Willett says he was incorrectly quoted in saying Wilson is the only Southeastern District school without a stadium of its own.
``What I said was that when Norcom gets a stadium with its new school we will become the only school in the district without its own stadium,'' said Willett.
Churchland's Robert Davis was selected as the outstanding camper in a golf camp in Florida. There were 43 campers and Davis finished as runner-up in a camp-ending tournament.
The Sports Club has lined up Boo Williams as its first program speaker in the new year.
Williams conducts an outstanding AAU basketball program.
Former Wilson basketball player Ericka Bynum was selected on the all-tournament team when Virginia Wesleyan won the V.W.C. TipOff Classic.
The junior center had 23 points and 14 rebounds in the title-game win over Salisbury State, 75-71.
The cast has been removed from the wrist that Norcom basketball player Eric Pope broke earlier. He's now working out with the team.
The Greyhounds, winless in three outings but competitive in all of those games, will be strengthened by the return of the senior guard. by CNB
