Martha Macklin Smith, 71, of Virginia Beach, died Dec. 15, 1994, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mrs. Smith was born in Suffolk, Va. She was the widow of architect Herbert L. Smith III. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the College of William and Mary, class of 1945. A loving mother and best friend to her three sons, she also was a teacher for 20 years in the Virginia Beach School system. A gifted athlete, she concentrated her abundant skills on golf. She was ladies' champion of Princess Anne Country Club 21 times. She was also Ladies Virginia State seniors champion several times. Mrs. Smith was a past president of the Virginia State Golf Association-Women's Division. She was also a member of the U.S. Senior Women's Golf Association and the Tidewater Women's Golf Association. Mrs. Smith was always active in the affairs of the church; she was head of the lay readers for Galilee Episcopal church for many years.
She is survived by her three sons, Herbert L. Smith IV and W. Macklin Smith, both of Virginia Beach, H. Garrett Smith II and his wife, Lisa of Williamsburg; a sister, Mrs. Mary Helen Rawls of Suffolk, Va.; and a brother, Harold Macklin of Richmond, Va.
A church service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. Burial will be in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, or to the American Cancer Society. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
