PRUDENCE B. THORPE

Prudence Bazemore Thorpe, 80, died Dec. 16, 1994, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Thorpe was a native of Bertie County, N.C., and lived in Newsoms most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Julian Langley and Mary W. Moore Bazemore and was the widow of Vernon Darden Thorpe Jr. Mrs. Thorpe taught in the public school systems in North Carolina and Franklin, Va. After 50 years of teaching she retired from Southampton Academy in Courtland. Mrs. Thorpe was a graduate of Louisburg Junior College and East Carolina State Teachers College. She was a former president of the Association of Virginia Academies and was a longtime member of Barnes United Methodist Church, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class and was choir director for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Moore Thorpe of Richmond and Marjorie T. McClenny of Sedley; four grandchildren, Erin Polley and Michael Polley, both of Richmond, Tyson McClenny and Taylor McClenny, both of Sedley; her son-in-law, Joe McClenny; two sisters-in-law, Frances Thorpe Butler of Newsoms and Virginia Bazemore of Hampton; and one niece, Nancy Kearney of Hampton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Barnes United Methodist Church by the Rev. Pat Tony. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and suggest memorials be made to the church.
