A 23-year-old man was shot several times while sitting behind the wheel of his car in the Mr. Magic's nightclub parking lot early Friday, and a security guard captured the suspect.
This is the second serious shooting in less than two months involving patrons of the nightclub in the 500 block of Newtown Road, and about the 200th time this year police have been called to the shopping center that houses the club.
The victim of Friday's assault, Larry E. Burrus, of the 6600 block of Pilot Ave. in Norfolk, is in critical condition after surgery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, police spokesman Lou Thurston said.
Robert Barcelona, a security guard protecting a nearby business, chased and tackled the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Keith D. Holley, of the 400 block of Spring Court.
Officers Steven Kennedy and Gregory Hayes arrested Holley, Thurston said.
Holley is being held without bail in the city jail.
Thurston said he didn't know the motive for the shooting, but said both men had been inside Mr. Magic's before it happened. Thurston said Burrus was driving away from the club when Holley approached him and shot him several times in the torso.
On Oct. 28, a Mr. Magic's patron was killed in a neighboring parking lot after someone apparently followed him from the club and shot him in the head. Tracey L. Snead, of Chesapeake, died in a hospital. Police have not made an arrest.
On May 10, officer Dennis K. Dorshimer was shot at by a Mr. Magic's patron as Dorshimer arrived for a fight call. ILLUSTRATION: Keith D. Holley is being held in the shooting of a Norfolk man
