OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY researchers say it's very important to keep bird feeders full. ``A lesson for those feeding birds is that it is important to never allow feeders to run out of food. Keeping feeders filled make them predictable food sources and allow feeding birds to remain less heavy during more of the day,'' they report.
If a birds carries more fat during the day, the researchers say it becomes more vulnerable to capture by hawks, cats and the like. Keep your bird feeders filled at all times and don't forget to provide water for the birds. MORE MULCH THAN ONE MAN NEEDS
Need mulch? Rosarian Arnie Eggen has a lot of leaves and a grinder, and he's willing to grind his leaves and give them to you free. He laments the number of bags of leaves left at curbside for the garbage people to pick up and wants to do something to help the ecology. Give him a break - take an empty bag and trade an empty for a full one. Eggen lives in the Thoroughgood area of Virginia Beach. Call 464-6578 for directions. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
LAKE COUNTY NURSERY
It looks like holly, but it's not. The Malus Sugar Tyme, a new
flowering crabapple, has tiny red berries on bare limbs give it a
Christmas look in winter.
