November's Republican landslide brought a side effect that was a Christmas present to all Americans: President Clinton converted to Republican and is embracing all the articles of the Contract With America as written by Newt Gingrich.
He has seen the light and now wants a tax cut and deep cuts in government spending. He even talks of cutting back welfare. He is now one of the good old conservative boys.
Three cheers for Jesse Helms. He shot off his mouth in the right direction and got results. President Clinton is now promoting a $25 billion increase in the defense budget to bring the military up to strength.
And the icing on the cake: Joycelyn Elders was fired. It will be a happy New Year after all.
