Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr. toured the Tidewater Detention Home in
Chesapeake on Tuesday as part of effort to find ways to help stop
young offenders from committing additional crimes. Beyer talked to
inmates at the facility, which has a capacity of 52 inmates but has
housed as many as 124. Mattresses are kept under bunks for extra
inmates, who sleep on the floor. The center is being expanded to
hold 100 inmates in January 1996.
