SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Texas Tech, 14 notches ahead of Old Dominion in the women's basketball polls, walked off with a 14-point victory over the Lady Monarchs on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Women's San Juan Shootout.
``When the going gets tough, the tough get going. The tough folded today,'' ODU coach Wendy Larry said after the 67-53 setback.
The Lady Monarchs (6-1), No. 25 in the CNN-USA Today poll, will play Oklahoma State this afternoon in a consolation game (Radio: 5:45 p.m., WGH AM-1310). The Red Raiders, ranked 11th by The Associated Press, will play Virginia Tech - an 83-77 winner over Oklahoma State - in the final.
ODU led, 13-9, with 14:17 left in the first half but saw Texas Tech take the lead for good on an 11-0 run capped by a 3-poiner by Noel Johnson.
Clarisse Machanguana started and finished an 8-2 run that brought the Lady Monarchs within 50-45 with 9:55 left. The Red Raiders outscored ODU 17-8 the rest of the way.
Ticha Penicheiro scored 14 points and Machanguana and Esther Benjamin had 12 each for Old Dominion. Michi Atkins had 19 points for Texas Tech (11-2). by CNB
