Bob Wellman, who managed the Tidewater Tides for two seasons in the Carolina League in 1967-68, died Tuesday. He was 69.
Wellman served as a scout and minor league manager for the New York Mets since 1977. The club said he died in Covington, Ky., after a long illness.
Wellman managed in the minor leagues for 25 years. His most recent position with the Mets was as a Midwest scout.
Wellman, who was born in Norwood, Ohio, played in the major leagues for 15 games as an outfielder for Philadelphia Athletics, managed by Connie Mack, in 1948 and 1950. He hit .280, going 7 for 25.
The funeral will be held Thursday in Cincinnati.
