MAN ACCUSED OF THREAT TO SOCIAL WORKER

Police have charged a man with threatening the life of a social services worker after he allegedly delivered a dismembered Barbie doll covered with ketchup to her office.

The man, Paul C. Muhly, 36, of the 4500 block of Wicklow Place, was released from jail Tuesday on $1,000 bail.

Before the doll was delivered, at least one threatening letter was mailed to the social worker - allegedly by Muhly - said police spokesman Mike Carey. A second threatening letter was included with the Barbie doll, said Detective Sherry L. Curtis.

The letters were not signed, Curtis said, and Muhly is denying involvement.

The social worker, Janie Livesay, is a potential witness against Muhly for another case, Carey said. Muhly has been accused of making unwanted advances toward another woman who attends the same social services group program as Muhly, a group that Livesay oversees. The nature of that program was unclear Wednesday.

Livesay apparently reprimanded Muhly after the woman told her of the alleged advances, Carey said.

Police said Muhly persisted with the woman, and was charged with harassing her. Curtis said Muhly apparently blamed the social worker for getting involved.

The ketchup-covered doll was left in an envelope at Livesay's office in the 3400 block of Virginia Beach Blvd., Carey said.

The charge of threatening a witness is a misdemeanor.

The case is still under investigation.
