CHRISTMAS IS A time for music.
From pop, comedy and traditional carols to jazz, sacred and classical music, the season has always offered a potpourri of music and you can bet your last sprig of holly that Chesapeake's own radio station, WFOS-FM 88.7, will again offer listeners a musical gift during this weekend's holiday observance.
Christmas Eve
Seasonal swing, 4-7 p.m. - Host Annalisa Murden will offer you a hip holiday of sorts as she gives her weekly ``Saturday Bandstand'' a decidedly seasonal feel.
Murden will feature the big band sounds of the season along with the usual array of carols and novelty tunes.
In her ``Old Time Radio'' spot she'll broadcast an ``Amos 'n' Andy'' radio series Christmas special. In the show, Andy becomes a department store Santa just so he can get a special doll for Amos' daughter, Arabella.
Bach special, 7-8 p.m. - This program from Radio Deutsche Welle will feature Johann Sebastian Bach's famous ``Christmas Oratorio.''
The performance will feature soprano Barbara Schlick, alto Ursula Eittinger, tenor Nico van der Meel and bass Peter Kooy with Peter Neumann directing the Cologne Chamber Choir and the Collegium Cartusianum.
Christmas in Cologne, 8-9 p.m. - ``Kolsche Weihnacht,'' or ``Christmas in Cologne,'' will present a collection of seasonal songs in dialect written, arranged and gathered over the past 10 years.
Included in the program will be the songs ``Come, Let's Sing Again,'' ``Zinter Klos,'' ``How It Used to Be'' and ``My Christmas Wish'' as performed by the Street Singers from the Riehl District, the Altenberger Kreuz Choir and others.
Music for Christmas Eve, 9:05-midnight - To keep you in the spirit while you wrap those last-minute presents and assemble those bikes, jungle gyms and play forts, WFOS will feature three well-known classical Christmas works: Vivaldi's ``Gloria,'' Menotti's modern seasonal opera ``Amahl and the Night Visitors'' and Bach's ``Magnificat'' along with host of traditional Christmas songs.
Vivaldi's ``Gloria'' in D Major (RV 589) features sopranos Mary Burgess and Jocelyne Chamonin and contralto Carolyn Watkinson with Jean-Claude Malgoire leading the Ensemble Vocal Raphael Passaquet and La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy.
Gian Carlo Menotti's ``Amahl and the Night Visitors'' features the original cast who performed in the Dec. 24, 1951 NBC television broadcast that includes Chet Allen, Rosemary Kuhlmann, Andrew McKinley, David Aiken, Leon Lishner and Frank Monachino with Thomas Schippers conducting the NBC Orchestra and Chorus.
Bach's Magnificat in D Major (BWV 243) features sopranos Arleen Auger and Ann Murray, contralto Helen Watts, tenor Adalbert Kraus and bass singers Philippe Huttenlocher and Wolfgang Schoene with Helmut Rilling conducting the Gachinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart.
Christmas Day
Joy, 6-7 a.m. - Host Jim Connett of radio station KFUO in St. Louis will present a program of traditional songs and compositions performed by such artists as the Robert Shaw Chorale, the Canadian Brass, the London Brass, the Cambridge Singers, Symphony Brass of Chicago, Roger Wagner Chorale, the Bach Choir, Taverner Consort, New York Choral Artists and others.
The show's program will include ``Joy to the World,'' ``Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,'' ``O Come All Ye Faithful,'' ``O Little Town of Bethlehem,'' ``Silent Night,'' ``Angels We Have Heard on High,'' ``Carol of the Bells,'' ``Coventry Carol'' and many more.
Sing for Joy, 7-7:30 a.m. - Host Dr. Alvin Rueter will feature liturgical music for Christmas including ``He Is Born,'' ``Mexican Christmas Procession,'' ``While Shepherds Watched,'' ``Unto Us a Child Is Born'' and many more.
The selection will be performed by artists including the Roger Wagner Chorale, the National Lutheran Choir, the Boston Camerata, the St. Olaf Catonrei and others.
Music and the Spoken Word, 7:30-8 a.m. - This program, featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, will include music and inspirational words of the season.
The program will feature the choir performing ``Carol from an Irish Cabin,'' ``Bring Your Torches,'' ``The Night of the Star,'' ``I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day'' and others.
Music for Christmas morning, 8 a.m.-noon - To get you through the hectic holiday morning when the family is tearing into presents, host Jayne Smith will feature selections from the best new Christmas releases of 1994.
Pops for All with Bob Deal, noon-3 p.m. - This one will feature an array of popular and unusual season sounds including ``Crystal Carols on Glass Harmonica'' as performed by Dean Shostak of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation along with the more accessible ``Joy to the World'' Boston Pops album featuring conductor John Williams.
Symphonic Band with Bob Deal, 3-4 p.m. - Deal shows up again, but this time he'll be offering some very brassy Christmas music.
Deal will feature ``Holly and Ivy,'' with Lt. Col. Lowell E. Graham conducting the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command of Langley Air Force Base blowing its way through a program of seasonal favorites.
Doo-wop Christmas, 4-7 p.m. - Hosts Larry Eberhardt and Jason Campen will offer this unique slant on favorite holiday songs and sentiments.
The two will play a variety of Christmas songs sung in soulful street-corner harmony styles. The three-hour show will feature all the great vocal groups of the '50s and '60s. Merry Christmas, baby.
Christmas Evening Special, 7-9 p.m. - Rounding out its program of seasonal sounds, WFOS will present Johann Sebastian Bach's magnificent Mass In B Minor, BWV 232.
This performance will feature the work of sopranos Sylvia McNair and Deloris Ziegler, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, tenor John Aler, baritone William Stone and bass Thomas Paul directed by Robert Shaw, who also conducts the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus.
