Nancy Kennedy left Virginia Beach for the lights of Tinseltown 14 years ago. Now personal trainer to such Hollywood luminaries as Julia Roberts, Angelica Houston and Carole Kane, the Kempsville High School graduate coaches her clients in one-on-one sessions designed around fitness training and nutrition education.
``I teach them to change their lifestyle forever,'' says the youthful blond mother of a 16-year-old son. ``I show them how they can maintain on their own.''
Currently at work on a book titled, ``Body Building Saved My Life,'' Kennedy explained, ``That's exactly what happened. My former husband introduced me to body building. Body building helped me build my self-esteem and get my act together.''
Kennedy recently offered some practical advice for anybody concerned with staying in shape through the holidays and beyond.
``The first thing is not to over-indulge to begin with. Watch your fat intake. Most people have no self-discipline, which is why the fitness industry has taken off like it has. Not everyone can afford a personal trainer. With a little self-discipline you can do this on your own.
``Second, get into a training program. I tell my clients to write down their goals. The goals should be realistic. Too many people set themselves up for failure with unrealistic goals.
``And last, there is the myth of diet. Throw that out the window. Change your lifestyle forever so you'll never have to diet again. It's very important to drink lots of water, eight glasses per day. Keep water on your desk and in your car. It flushes toxins, it fills you up. Most people are dehydrated and don't even know it.''
Nutrition and regular exercise become even more important as people age, according to Kennedy, because, ``our metabolism slows down. Gravity and age catch up with us. Working out not only prolongs life but improves its quality. As we get older we need to exercise three or four times a week.''
Kennedy recommends working out as ``a great self-esteem builder. It's better than any therapy or counseling and it makes you feel just great about yourself. You wake your body up.
``My main goal,'' she said, ``is educating all my clients about everything they need to live a full and happy life.'' ILLUSTRATION: Graphic

NANCY KENNEDY'S RECIPES
Virginia beach native Nancy Kennedy, now living and working in
Hollywood, provides personal training and nutritional advice to a
client list that includes Angelica Huston and Julia Roberts.
What's a Pretty Woman to do about the trying temptation of turkey
tenderloins, or the powerful lure of pumpkin pie? Sometimes even
star power isn't enough to fend off the weight gain that often
accompanies holiday mirth making, so Kennedy recommends the
accompanying basic recipes, which can eliminate most of the fat from
a holiday menu.
