CUTTING IS NOT IMPROVING

Gov. George Allen lacks responsibility when it comes to education. He constantly brags about how he is going to make state colleges and universities more efficient by cutting programs that he considers useless.

His attempt to freeze hiring at state universities is ridiculous. How can he improve, or maintain, the quality of education in Virginia? Are great educators going to come to a state where they know resources are lacking?

Education is among the most important activities that state government coordinates and is probably the only area that needs drastic increases rather than massive cuts.

Governor Allen is concerned only about the present. If he wants to invest in the future, he should quit doing the rich a favor. Cutting taxes is not worth a decrease in education.

``Restructuring'' Virginia's universities is doing no good to our state.

It's good to eliminate waste in spending, but George Allen should get his priorities in order. The state is heading into a deep hole.
