MORE BEAUTY SHOPS are blossoming in Suffolk.

Sheila P. and Calvin L. Bradshaw, a married couple, have been operating Hair Plus at Suffolk Shopping Center for more than two years. The business offers both hair styling and barber services, and it has become so successful that the couple decided to split the shop into barbering and hair styling at two separate locations.

Hair Plus has three full-time barbers and one who works part time.

The spin-off, Hair Pizazz, has opened at 2211 North Main St. in spaces formerly housing a gas station and more recently, a used-car dealer. Hair Pizazz has eight hair stylists.

Sheila has used her favorite colors, purple and green, to give the new shop a distinctive and attention-getting look, inside and out.

Hair Pizazz offers manicures ($8) and pedicures ($20), plus shampoos, cuts, perms ($35) and styles. Six of the eight stylists work full-time.

``We specialize in weaving (hair extensions) and braiding,'' on both black- and white-textured hair.

Bradshaw, 30, and a stylist for 12 years, takes walk-ins as well as appointments, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cynthia A. ``Cyndie'' Howard, also 30, will open Beauty Unlimited on Jan. 3 at 300B Carolina Road, near Salmons Paint and Decorating and in spaces formerly occupied by Flowers Bakery.

She has been a cosmetologist for seven years and has heretofore worked for others in their shops. It has been her lifelong dream to own her own salon, she said.

``Thanks to my customers, I am now able to do it.'' She has enough of a following that by the end of 1995, she said she plans to have six hairdressers and two nail technicians. At present, she does hair and employs one full-time nail technician. She is looking to hire additional workers and welcomes applicants to stop by.

By year's end, Howard also plans to have tanning and facial rooms.

Beauty Unlimited is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday by appointment.

Otherwise, walk-ins are encouraged to come in, Howard said.

Cindy J. Lester has just opened Cindy's Nail Boutique in the Magnolia section.

Her shop adds to the Lester family businesses on Portsmouth Boulevard.

Her father-in-law, Ieager (pronounced Yeager), and husband, Willie, operate Lester Bros. auto repair shop. Her mother-in-law, Joyce, owns Body Tone, which features motorized table exercise, and tanning.

``My goal is for a customer to be able to have a car fixed next door and, while you wait, get a tan, exercise and get your nails and hair done.''

At the moment, Cindy Lester is not doing hair. The former secretary went to school at Wards Corner Beauty Academy for three months before becoming state licensed to do nails.

She plans to some day return to school to work toward a cosmetology license.

Lester has wanted to own her own beauty parlor since watching her grandmother, Wilma Holland, operate one from her home for many years when Lester was a child.

Cindy Lester's 9-year-old daughter, Casey, is following in mom's footsteps and helps in the salon when she is not in school, by vacuuming, carrying warm water for manicures and watering plants.

Cindy's Nail Boutique offers manicures ($8) and pedicures ($13) and sets of acrylic tips ($20); all special prices through January 1995. Fill-ins cost $10.

The hours are Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with 5 to 9 p.m. reserved for appointments. Wednesday and Friday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MICHAEL KESTNER
