Joseph Robert Sleeper, 65, of the 2500 block of Chesapeake Ave., died Dec. 24, 1994, in his home.
He was a native of Tilton, N.H., and was Roman Catholic. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy having served 28 years before retiring. He was a member of Eagles Lodge (NU)795, Fleet Reserve Branch (NU)90, Retired Officers Association, American Legion Post (NU)204, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post (NU)4809.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Powell Sleeper; three sons, Jay R. Sleeper of Gloucester, William Daniel Sleeper of South Boston, Va., and David N. Sleeper of Erwin, N.C.; two step-daughters, Melody Woolard and Beverly Athans, both of Chesapeake; his mother, Isabelle Robert Sleeper of Bristol, N.H.; two sisters, Rosemarie Valliere of Groton, Conn., and Barbara Veator of Bristol, N.H.; three brothers, Jon B. Sleeper of Tilton, N.H., Andrew E. Sleeper of Northfield, N.H., and George Sleeper of Tilton, N.H.; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by Father Timothy Drake. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service on Wednesday.
