What's in store for New Year's Eve on WFOS-FM 88.7?
It's not the music of Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians.
As a New Year's treat and a way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Arthur Fiedler on Dec. 17, 1894, the station will offer a full evening devoted to his life and music.
You'll remember him as the personable and internationally known former director and conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. The colorful Fiedler was known for his far reaching musical tastes, theatricality, sense of humor and his regal white hair and mustache.
``It was going to be either this or Guy Lombardo,'' said station programmer Dennis McCurdy. ``And we went with Fiedler as a way to honor his musical legacy.''
The evening will begin with the ``Discurio'' program at 7 p.m., which will air a radio biography about Fiedler from RCA Victor Radio programming.
That will be followed by a four-hour ``Fiedler Festival'' hosted by Jenny O'Shea, a second-year student at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, currently at home in Chesapeake for the holidays.
O'Shea's program will feature selections from RCA Records releases from 1955 to 1974, now on compact disc. Also to be included on the show will be rare Fiedler recordings on vinyl taken from WFOS record archives. MEMO: More information about the Fiedler New Year's of any other WFOS programs
