Shipyards, other area firms win federal contracts: Norshipco, the largest private shipyard in South Hampton Roads, was awarded a $4.4 million ship-repair contract from the Navy, while Associated Naval Architects Inc. in Portsmouth received a $498,725 Navy contract for ship repair. The Coast Guard's Facilities Design and Construction Center awarded a $401,412 contract to Hanbury Evans Newill Vlattas & Co. of Norfolk for construction design and preparation services. And J.C. Driskell Inc. of Virginia Beach won a $284,000 contract to replace two buildings at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Langley Research Center. (Staff)
McDonald's to slash price on Big Mac, Egg McMuffin: McDonald's Corp. said that it will cut the price of its flagship Big Mac burger to 95 cents in January, marking the sandwich's lowest price since 1979. The world's largest fast-food chain said the other promotions planned for 1995 include new advertising and new menu items. The promotions are designed to cut into sales of McDonald's rivals, especially Burger King Corp., a unit of Grand Metropolitan Plc, which has seen its restaurant traffic increase as a result of its movie tie-ins with Walt Disney Co. Rail service in North Carolina to continue despite expiring lease: The North Carolina Railroad Company said that service provided by Norfolk Southern Corp. will continue uninterrupted even though Norfolk Southern's lease expires today. A proposed lease extension has not been finalized. Maintenance of the 317-mile line, as well as Norfolk Southern's payments to NCRR under the old agreement, also will continue. The NCRR announced in November that it had reached ``a meeting of the minds'' with Norfolk Southern on major terms for a lease extension, including proposed lease fees, inflation provisions and length of term.
