James E. ``Sarge'' Spruiell, 78, of the 1400 block of Lake Forest Drive, a retired tool room mechanic, died Jan. 3, 1995, in Maryview Medical Center.
Mr. Spruiell was born in Scotland Neck, N.C., and was retired from the Norfolk Naval Air Station after 28 years. He was a member and trustee of New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He was a Mason and a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Vineta L. Spruiell; a daughter, Evelyn Fulgham of Spotsylvania, Va.; a son, James Haley of Portsmouth; two sisters, Mamie Webb of Portsmouth and Estelle Jordan of New Jersey; two brothers, Roosevelt Spruiell and Phillip Spruiell, both of Scotland Neck; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, the Rev. James M. Whitaker and Junious L. Whitaker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Mark M. Whitaker. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, with military honors. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Friday in Corprew Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church prior to the funeral service.
