Dr. Meyer Irving Krischer, 84, of the 6000 block of River Road, a retired physician, died Jan. 6, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
Dr. Krischer retired from general practice in 1975 after 36 years of service, but continued as a Virginia state medical examiner until his death.
Dr. Krischer was a native of New York City, and a resident of Norfolk since 1947. He was the son of the late Nathan Aaron and Mollie Weinstock Krischer. He enlisted in the U.S. Army for active duty in 1941 and was discharged from active duty in 1945 and remained in active reserves until 1979 after attaining the rank of Colonel. He was a member of Temple Israel in Norfolk.
Dr. Krischer graduated from New York University with a B.S. in 1931 and graduated from the Medical University of Glascow with a M.D. in 1937. He served his internship at Manhattan General Hospital, and was in private practice in New York as a general practitioner from 1939 to 1941 and in Norfolk from 1947 to 1975 as a general practitioner and medical examiner for the State of Virginia. Dr. Krischer was director of civil defense for the City of Norfolk from 1952-1965.
Dr. Krischer was a member of the American Medical Association; Virginia Medical Society; Norfolk Academy of Medicine; American Academy of Family Practice; Virginia Academy of Family Practice; Tidewater Academy of Family Practice; Botanical Garden Society; Tidewater Rose Society; Men's Garden Club; Retired Officers Association; Reserve Officers Association; past commander of Norfolk Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars and its past national surgeon general; past president and current board member of the Association of the United States Army; Norfolk Masonic Lodge (NU)1; and the National Sojourners. He was a former member of the Advisory Committee to the Norfolk Botanical Society.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Helen Green Krischer; two daughters, Ruth Krischer Burns and her husband, Mark of Norfolk, Jeanne Carol Sheldon and her husband, Donald of Annapolis, Md; two brothers, Sidney Edward Krischer and Benton E. Krischer, both of Los Angeles; and two grandchildren, Mark Jr. and Dana Burns.
A chapel service will be conducted on Sunday at 2 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, by Rabbi Michael E. Panitz and Cantor Isaac Danker. Graveside services with full military honors will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
