In a joint venture with the Kansas City Southern Railway, Norfolk Southern Railroad has launched a new intermodal train service between Dallas and Atlanta. The new train, called the ``Hotshot 20,'' will offer truck-competitive second morning service between the two major transport hubs. Aggressive rates and expedited service will make the train competitive with over-the-road freight moving along Interstate 20 between the two cities, Norfolk Southern said. The train will run six days a week, once a day in both directions. Kansas City Southern will operate the train between Dallas and Meridian, Miss., and Norfolk Southern the rest of the way. Rutherford, N.J.-based Nextel provides services in both segments of the wireless market - voice, or cellularlike services, and data, or paging. By teaming with PageNet and SkyTel, MCI hopes to become a force in the wireless market, while simultaneously bolstering its long-distance business. Interstate Bakeries Corp. agreed to acquire the Continental Baking Group subsidiary of Ralston Purina Co. for about $556 million in cash and stock. Continental is the country's largest fresh bakery company, with about $2 billion in revenue, nearly twice that of Interstate. The move would catapult Interstate from the third-largest company in the industry to the largest, giving it such famous brands as Wonder bread and Hostess Twinkies. (Bloomberg) by CNB
