Dr. Claudie Mackey, in his ninth year as men's head basketball coach at Elizabeth City State University, has resigned the position. The resignation, given to athletic director Edward McLean on Friday, will be effective March 1.
A prepared statement said that ``it became obvious to Mackey that his bout with cancer and other medical ailments have made it difficult for him to provide the leadership needed to help the team develop to its fullest potential.''
Mackey, a graduate of ECSU, had his best season as head coach last year as he led the Vikings to a 23-7 record and a birth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
This year, the Vikings are struggling at 4-6. Mackey's career record is 111-112. ILLUSTRATION: Elizabeth City State men's coach Claudie Mackey led the Vikings
