Some people have written letters critical of Sheriff Robert McCabe's refusal to allow the Salvation Army to distribute Christmas gifts to Norfolk jail inmates. Based on several discussions with various individuals, I believe that most people support his position. I certainly do.
It also seems to me that the Salvation Army could find more deserving individuals on whom to spend money. I doubt that many people want to see their contributions used to provide gifts to jail inmates at Christmas or any other time.
I also strongly support Sheriff McCabe's use of jail inmates to clean the city's neighborhoods of litter, as you reported in your paper some time ago. I hope this is an ongoing practice.
