Detlev Michelangelo Bunger, 22, died Monday, Jan. 9, 1995.
Detlev was a native of Greenville and a graduate of J.H. Rose High School. For the past 4 1/2 years, he had attended East Carolina University and was to graduate in May with a B.S. degree in Biology Magna Cum Laude. He was president of Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and a member of Tri Beta Biology Honors Society. He was a committed animals' rights activist and a vegetarian.
He is survived by his father, Dr. Robert L. Bunger Jr. of Greenville; his mother, Gundula von Schlippenbach-Bunger of Kiel, Germany; stepmother, Drillie E. Bunger of Greenville; fiancee, Margaret P. Martin of Greenville; paternal grandmother, Nancy Haley Bunger of Portsmouth; maternal grandmother, Irmgard von Schlippenbach of Kiel, Germany; god-parents, Frank and Lucy Laudenslager of Allentown, Pa.; and mentor, Dr. Gregory A. Ross of Greenville.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Howell Science Complex, East Carolina University. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5:30 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Detlev M. Bunger Memorial Scholarship Fund, East Carolina University, Biology Department, Howell Science Center, Greenville, N.C. 27858.
