With a 13-point lead going into the fourth quarter, it looked as though fifth-ranked First Colonial would cruise to an easy win over No. 9 Bayside.
But that was before the Marlins' Kristy Bryant went to work.
Bryant exploded for 19 of her school-record 42 points and sparked a 32-8 run that lifted Bayside over the visiting Patriots Tuesday night, 67-56.
``Kristy Bryant showed tremendous heart,'' First Colonial coach Sandy Bartle said. ``It's the most heart I've seen from any kid in this league. She won the game and it was hers.''
Down by 11 with 7:08 left in the final period, Bayside, pressing full court, got a steal from Dawn Bell. She dished it off to Bryant, who sank a 3-pointer.
A minute later, Byant nailed another trey off an inbounds play to put Bayside within four.
On First Colonial's ensuing possession, Bell forced Katy Walters to turn the ball over and Bartle called a timeout.
The Patriots switched to a zone, but Bryant stayed hot. She hit another 3-pointer and finally tied it with 5:55 remaining with the last of her treys. Bryant gave the Marlins the lead with 3:22 to go on a fast-break layup.
``I just brought everything from inside of me out,'' said Bryant, who also grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals. ``I let everything come out of me in this game.''
With just over a minute to play, First Colonial was forced to foul to stop the clock. Bayside (6-5, 4-3 Beach District) iced the game by sinking seven of eight free throws.
``This is most special,'' Bayside coach Conrad Parker said of his team, which is down to eight players. ``I think their minds - especially in the first half - really weren't where they were supposed to be and then all of a sudden, hey, when you've got a girl shooting the ball like she (Bryant) was.''
In the first half, Bayside played miserable man-to-man defense. First Colonial took a 19-9 first quarter lead and went into the locker room up, 31-18.
Jamie Kollar led First Colonial (4-4, 4-4) with 16 points. Walters and Angela Carmines added 11 points apiece. by CNB
