The public is invited to watch the 6th Virginia Volunteer Infantry encampment at the William T. Holland House, 6501 Holland Road, Saturday and Sunday.
The troops will re-enact the encampment of Brig. Gen. Roger Pryor's Brigade, Confederate forces that were headquartered there Jan. 26-29, 1863.
Jim Lawhon and his family have lived in the Holland House since February.
``I knew it was antebellum, but I didn't know its history,'' said Lawhon, who has been involved with Civil War re-enactments for 18 years.
``The 6th Virginia Infantry is dedicated to educating the public about the Civil War and mid-19th century America,'' he said. ``With over 30 members, the 6th Virginia portrays not only the Nansemond Guards, a company recruited from the Suffolk area, but also the Suffolk Soldier's Aid Society.''
That was an organization that provided care and comfort to area soldiers.
This weekend's re-enactment will feature a Confederate camp set up near the house with soldiers demonstrating period tactics and weapons and performing many of the period work details, such as guard duty.
On Sunday, the soldiers will go on a five-mile march from the Holland House to the site of The Battle of Kelly's Store. Following the original route, they will head east on U.S. 58, turn north on Buckhorn Road, then east on Indian Trail Road.
Kelly's Store was located on what is now the corner of Indian Trail Road and Old Mill Road.
The Suffolk Soldier's Aid Society will portray ladies of the area of that era, showing how they provided aid and support. They also will offer demonstrations of mid-19th century home life. MEMO: For information on the Civil War re-enactment by the 6th Virginia
