ECONOMY: HIGH TECH SHOW IN HAMPTON

Hampton The Peninsula will show off its achievements in technology at an April economic development fair.

Expotech, intended to lure high-tech firms to the Peninsula, is scheduled April 5 through 8 in the Holiday Inn and Conference Center at 1815 W. Mercury Blvd. in Hampton.

``It is up to us to use the opportunity to showcase what we can do,'' said Doug Juanarena, chairman of the Peninsula Advanced Technology Center.

PATC, which wants to help reduce the region's dependence on military spending, expects the symposium could attract 1,500 scientists and business executives.

``We want to aggressively promote and market our local businesses,'' said John Lawson, chairman of the Virginia Peninsula Economic Development Council.

``We've already got a number of world-class companies here,'' Lawson said. ``This gives us a very unique opportunity not just to tell other companies about the quality of life here, but to show them.''

VPEDC intends to spend $40,000 on the event. While April's fair will focus on Peninsula business, PATC plans call for a conference every two years, possibly open to high-tech firms in South Hampton Roads. At the April exposition:

Technology Opportunities Showcase will feature technologies developed by NASA Langley Research Center that could be developed for commercial use.

A similar event held in October 1993 at NASA Langley Research Center attracted more than 800 participants. So far, more than 600 people have signed up for this year's TOPS.

Talks and tours at the $600 million federal Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility in Newport News.
