SOUTHAMPTON SPEEDWAY HONORS CULPEPPER AS DRIVER OF THE YEAR

Late Model Sportsman driver Bert Culpepper was named Driver of the Year at Southampton Speedway's third annual awards banquet, held Saturday night at the Franklin-Southampton Agri-Civic Center.

The award capped the Chesapeake driver's 1994 season, in which he won the series championship by 12 points over Mike Shearin of Emporia, Va.

Sportsman-class driver Charles Meads of Elizabeth City was voted the winner of the sportsmanship award by his fellow drivers.

Other awards, by class, included:

Late Model Sportsman: Best pit crew, Bert Culpepper; sportsmanship, Greg Hubbard; most-improved driver, Gary Bradshaw; best-kept car, Mike Shearin; hard-luck driver and team, Glenn Hawkins.

Sportsman: Best pit crew, Dan Peters; sportsmanship, Tommy Shearin; most-improved driver, Vic Story; best-kept car, Speck Edwards; hard-luck driver and team, Paul Smith.

Limited Stock: Best pit crew, Tony Edwards; sportsmanship, Gene Story; most-improved driver, David Earl Pope; best-kept car, Flaming 5 Racing; hard-luck driver and team, Wilson Jones.

Mini-Stock: Best pit crew, Kendall Barnes; sportsmanship, Brian Farrow; most-improved driver, David Fowler; best-kept car, Rick Karn; hard-luck driver and team, Winky Futrell.
