RESENTENCING HEARING

GATESVILLE

RESENTENCING HEARING: Jury selection will continue today in a court-ordered new sentencing hearing for a man who faces the death penalty for the 1990 murders of a mother and her daughter in Eure.

Jerry Wayne Conner was granted a new hearing last year by the North Carolina Supreme Court, District Attorney Frank Parrish said.

Conner's 1991 conviction in the fatal shooting of Minh Linda Rogers and her daughter, Linda Minh Rogers, is not in question.

Jurors will decide only whether to reissue the death sentence or reduce the sentence to life in prison, Parrish said.

Conner was convicted of killing the women in their store at the Corner High crossroads in Gates County on Aug. 18, 1990. He also was convicted of raping the daughter and armed robbery.

Parrish, who helped try the case as an assistant district attorney, said opening arguments would probably begin Friday or next week.
